February 1, 2021 4th and 5th Grade AIG Identification Process - Spring Window to Nominate Students Is Open
The 4th and 5th grade AIG nomination window is between January 29th - February 5th. This spring, the AIG identification process continues to consist of compiling a COVID student portfolio. There will be no formal AIG testing during the 2020-2021 school year. The COVID-19 student portfolio will take into account relevant graded student work samples and any relevant historical testing data. There will need to be strong evidence (graded work samples, report card grades, pre and post assessment testing data, Case 21 data, previous EOG/BOG scores, etc...) to support the student’s need for AIG services in order to meet the county created criteria for identification. Students must have at least 3 work samples that have been scored a level 4 by the classroom teacher in order to be nominated.
Please discuss your desire to nominate your child with your classroom teacher before completing the nomination form. The teacher must support your nomination in order to move forward with the AIG testing process.

This letter was sent to all third grade families earlier in the school year via your homeroom teacher. It is not required for students to participate in Explorers. Explorers groups are flexible and can change. If your student leaves the group your teacher will let them know. If this is a service you don’t want your student participating in please let us know.
2.) Informational Slide Deck - A Google Slide deck explaining how the AIG process will work in third grade during the 2020-2021 school year. This was sent to all third grade families earlier in the school year via your homeroom teacher.
January 25, 2021 AIG and Explorers Schedule - Starting 1/25/2021
Below is our new weekly schedule for AIG and Explorers. Since we are all currently in virtual learning we will meet via the Google Meet links in our Google Classrooms. This schedule will start Monday, January 25th.
Please keep in mind that sometimes we cannot predict how things may need to shift in terms of our schedule and our current COVID learning landscape. If/when some students begin to rotate back into the building we may need to make changes. We will continue to update the teachers first to be sure any changes fit their core lesson needs. We will then update the students using announcements in Google Classroom and parents via email.

November 5, 2020 Third Grade Families
Third Grade Explorers opportunities have started! Currently all students have been given the opportunity to engage in critical thinking activities on their asynchronous days. These "Brain Builders" are posted in their third grade teacher's Google classroom. On Tuesday we had over 170 third graders engage in the asynchronous work! 🌟
A Little About Explorers: The Wake County AIG Program supports a unique nurturing component, 3rd Grade Explorers. The AIG teacher works in partnership with third grade teachers to plan a variety of experiences designed to elicit high academic performance. Several times during the first part of the year, the AIG teacher works with the students. Students who demonstrate high performance participate in small group enrichment activities. Some students may participate in one or more small group experiences, while other students may not demonstrate a need for this enrichment.
To learn even more about Explorers read our parent letter by clicking HERE.

September 18, 2020 OCE AIG Families - AIG Updates
🍎 Updates - We won't have AIG updates every week. Our updates will be once or twice a month. We will send an email to families letting them know we have posted the AIG updates on this page of our website.
🍎AIG Schedule Changes - As you know OCE made changes to the master schedule for all grades. The current AIG schedule was not impacted and has not changed. It can be accessed HERE and in your student's AIG Google Classroom. If and when the AIG schedule changes we will send an email to parents as soon as we know.
🍎AIG Parent Meetings- Parent meetings have been scheduled! Please plan to attend one of the dates/times below. If you are unable to attend one of those contact us (Mrs. Seder and Ms. Sheehan) and we will find an alternative time to meet. The goal of this meeting is to review the goals and purpose of our AIG program at Olive Chapel. Any materials we share will be posted on the AIG Documents page on this website after the meetings. You can access that page by clicking HERE.
Meeting #1 - September 29th 12:30 PM - We will send the Google Meet link out via email 15 minutes before the meeting.
Meeting #2 - September 29th 3:30 PM - We will send the Google Meet link out via email 15 minutes before the meeting.
🍎 Live Meets/Synchronous Learning VS. Recorded Meets/Asynchronous Learning - First off, we appreciate all of the patience and understanding as we navigate the waters of remote learning. It is a learning year for everyone! According to WCPSS AIG district leadership AIG groups can occur synchronously and/or asynchronously this school year. This is a blessing for us! Typically when we are pulled for school testing or are tracked out AIG groups either have to be cancelled, moved to another time of the day, or shortened quite a bit. Through the use of both types of learning we are able to provide our AIG students with continuous direct AIG opportunities. For example, this week we were heavily involved in online SSA testing. But, we were able to offer direct AIG learning opportunities asynchronously as needed instead of just cancelling groups.
🍎We understand it will still take students time to adjust to monitoring their own schedule and juggling everythingthat comes with remote learning. (And might I just say they are rocking it! They really are superstars!🌟) To help the AIG students build their schedule routine and independence we have talked at great length with them about following these steps each week during their scheduled AIG block:
Step #1: Access our AIG Google Classroom at the start of our AIG time.
Step #2: Check the stream for messages from Mrs. Seder and/or Ms. Sheehan. (If there is a detailed message than our AIG work is going to be asynchronous. If there is not a detailed message indicating independent work than our AIG work is going to be live - hop into our Google meet link.)
Step #3: If learning is independent read and follow the directions. The message will indicate what students need to complete on their own in. All of the resources the students will need will be posted under the classwork tab.
September 14, 2020 OCE AIG Families - ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING
AIG direct lessons can be delivered in three ways -
🌟LIVE/Synchronously with the AIG teacher & AIG peers in our Google Meet
🌟Asynchronously via a pre-recorded video lesson from the AIG teacher
🌟Asynchronously via an independent assignment (no pre-recorded video will be included)
When AIG lessons are not live we encourage students to still complete it during their designated AIG time. This will help them maintain their regular weekly schedule.
When AIG lessons are not live we will post clear directions in the Stream and Classwork sections of our Google Classroom indicating what needs to be completed.

September 4, 2020 - AIG Families - Updates for the 2020-2021 School Year
What a big week! We hope your student's were as excited as we were this week! It was so nice to get back into the swing of all things AIG. All AIG groups in grades 4 and 5 met once this week for math and once for ELA. We worked to establish team meeting norms and got to know our AIG peers a bit. Then we jumped right into our AIG work! Big thank you for helping us get the students into our Google Classrooms! 👏 Read below for a few reminders and updates. Have a great three day weekend!
⚓Labor Day - Monday is a holiday so there is no school. No classes will be happening at OCE - this of course includes AIG. These students won't have a makeup session when we are out for a holiday. Just like the classroom teachers we alter our future plans to ensure nothing is missed. Unplug and enjoy this weekend!
⚓Synchronous & Asynchronous AIG Sessions - This week all of our AIG sessions were live/synchronous. However, there will be times throughout the year where our sessions could also be recorded/asynchronous. Just like the classroom teachers we will post all the resources students need in order to complete their asynchronous AIG work in our Google Classroom. We will let the teachers and students know ahead of time when this will occur.
⚓Curriculum Information - Be sure to check out the REMOTE LEARNING 2020-2021 page on this website. This is where we will post information about the AIG classroom. Curriculum updates are coming next week!
⚓Google Meet Links - All meets will occur using the links inside the Google Classrooms. These links allow us to keep the meets secure. Please do not share these links in an email or post them on a website. We've reminded the students to do the same.
⚓Media Center Update - Is your student looking for a new and interesting reading adventure? Did you know that you can check out books from our Media Center and schedule a time with Ms. Lanier to pick them up? Visit Ms. Lanier's OCE Books-To-Go site for more information. Your student can even attend Ms. Lanier's live office hours to hear about exciting new reads from our library.
⚓Tech Support - Need tech support? Visit our amazing tech resource page OCE Virtual Learning Resources for Families.

August 13, 2020 AIG Families AIG Updates for the 2020-2021 School Year
AIG Parents,
Welcome to the new year! First of all, we really appreciate all the support and patience you have provided OCE during this transition time. It is noted every day and GREATLY appreciated!! Please look for detailed AIG information to be emailed directly to you next week. This email will come directly from us - your AIG teachers - Anne Sheehan & Cindy Seder. We will be scheduling AIG parent meetings in the coming weeks, but please reach out with any questions in the meantime. (asheehan@wcpss.net & cseder@wcpss.net)
AIG Service Details - We are planning to start direct service during week three of the new year. We want the first two weeks to be a time for students to adjust to the new virtual world and to get to know their general education teachers. All AIG students will be served by the AIG teachers during this school year through small pull-out groups. This gives them time to work directly with their AIG peers and their AIG teachers. We will also continue to collaborate with general education teachers on the learning opportunities to ensure they are geared to what our AIG students need.
August 13, 2020 -AIG Families - Third Graders Who Were Identified Last School Year
Information is coming home soon! Due to the circumstances that occured in March we were unable to complete our paperwork process the way were typically do. We are working on getting everything completed by the end of the first week of school. We will be serving all of our AIG students in the virtual world. Parents will receive more information during the first week of school regarding service times and days.

5/8/2020 AIG Remote Learning Groups Continue
AIG students should attend their weekly meet using the link inside their AIG Google Classroom. (The link is not active until a teacher has signed in.) The schedule is linked below, has been shared with classroom teachers, and has been posted in our AIG Google Classroom. We will spend our time reviewing and discussing the Enrichment Challenges that have been created for students. These are optional, but heavily encouraged for our AIG students when possible. Last week we talked with the students about gauging their available time based on how they are doing with the assignments their homeroom teachers are giving them. If they are able to complete all of the weekly challenges that's great! If they are only able to complete part of the weekly challenges that is also great.
Also, if your AIG students needs a separate meet to chat about their work we are here to provide that support. It can be any of their current work - not just the Enrichment Challenges. Just let us know and we will work with you to find a common time.
ACCESS THE SCHEDULE HERE

AIG students are able to continue to access the resources in our AIG Google Classrooms, but nothing new will be posted at this time. If there is an old assignment they did not complete they are welcome to work on it.
We want to support you and your student as they adjust to remote learning with their homeroom teacher(s) in any way we can. If we can support in any way please reach out via email asheehan@wcpss.net and cseder@wcpss.net.

If you have questions about your student please contact your homeroom teacher and/or the AIG teachers for specific information.

12/5/2019 Spring Testing Nominations for AIG Testing Reminders
*No new nominations will be accepted for students on track 1 and 3. The deadline to nominate was December 2nd.
*The deadline to nominate students on track 2 is December 10th. The deadline to nominate students on track 4 is January 27th.
*Remember, students can only be tested one time each school year. If your student was tested in the fall they cannot be tested in the spring.

12/4/2019 Fall AIG Testing Results
As of today we have received all of our fall testing results. The district encountered a roadblock with our test providers and so the results were delayed for some of our track 1 students. Currently we are completing additional testing for students that need it and are working with our School Based Committee for Gifted Education to determine next steps for any student who was tested.
*We hope to have all identification results back to students on tracks 2, 3, and 4 by December 20th.
*Some track 1 results won't be available until after the winter break because of the delay the district encountered when getting the tests scored.
If you have questions about your student please contact Cindy Seder (cseder@wcpss.net) or your general education teacher.

Students with at least one usable score (95% or higher) on the CogAT or Iowa tests will begin the AIG identification process. A consent letter will be sent to the parents of these students. 11/15/2018 4th and 5th Grade Fall Identification Process
We received our CogAT and Iowa tests results on Wednesday from the testing office. The School Based Committee for Gifted Education is meeting Friday morning to make decisions on what next steps are appropriate for these students. You will get your student's score reports (CogAT and Iowa) Friday afternoon. Teachers have been asked to send them home in the Friday folders. In the coming weeks you will receive paperwork indicating the committee's final decision. By December 19th all parents and students will be notified of the final decision. In the meantime, please contact me if you have any questions!
*Please Note: Unfortunately the system the AIG department uses to enter all of the identification data is down for the next few weeks because it is being audited. In order to finalize any identification decisions we must input all information into this system and then submit it for approval by central office. We are unable to do this right now. As soon as the system is back up and running we will start the process of getting the paperwork completed.
11/14/2018 Third Grade IOWA Testing for Track 3 and Track 4
Good Morning Parents! All CogAT scores for third grade have been returned and analyzed by the School Based Committee for Gifted Education as of today. You will be receiving (Track 4 you should have already received this) your student's score report and a parent explanation letter from the district office. Students who scored in the 85th percentile on any section of the test are automatically eligible to take the Iowa tests. If your student did not score in the 85th percentile they can still take the Iowa tests, but they must be nominated by their teacher or by you the parent. This nomination must be received in writing (hand written note or email) before the day of the test.
Testing Dates: Monday November 26th and Tuesday November 27th
Iowa Tests Information: The Iowa tests have a reading section and a math section. One section is administered each day. Students get 30 minutes to complete as much of the test as they can. The Iowa tests are set up very much like their classroom formal assessments (Case 21, BOG, & EOG). There are 25-35 questions on each section of the test.
10/30/2018 Third Grade IOWA Testing for Track 1 and Track 2
If your student was nominated for the Iowa tests you received a testing consent form with your student's CogAT score report. This testing consent form must be signed and returned in order for us to administer the Iowa tests to your student. If you have not returned this to school please do so ASAP. (Even if you mark that you do not want us administering the tests it must be returned to school.)
Nominated track 1 and track 2 students will take the Iowa tests on November 5th and November 7th. Testing will occur in the morning. One day they will take the reading test and one day they will take the math test. These are timed tests. Students will have 30 minutes to complete as much as they can. These tests look very similar to the formal reading and math assessments they take in their classrooms. The best way to prepare for these is to get plenty of sleep the night before and eat a good breakfast.
10/29/2018 Third Grade CogAT Results
At this point track 1, 2, and 4 CogAT results have been given to all teachers and should have been sent home with students. If you have not gotten your students please contact your homeroom teacher or the AIG teachers. Track 3 will receive their results when they track back in.
10/23/2018 Third Grade CogAT Results
We just received the third grade CogAT results yesterday. We are currently in the middle of analyzing them with the School Based Committee for Gifted Education. Once this is finalized scores will be sent home to all parents. (Track 1 results went home on 10/15/2018.) Tracks 2 and 4 should receive their CogAT results by Monday, October 29th. Track 3 will receive their results once they track back in.
Parents/Guardians will receive a student score report and a letter explaining the test. Student's who scored an 85% or higher in at least one area will receive an invitation to take the Iowa assessments. Students who did not score an 85% or higher in at least one area are still able to take the Iowa tests if a teacher or parent nominates them. This nomination must be received in writing and before the Iowa tests take places. Contact your classroom teacher or the AIG teachers immediately if you want your student to take the Iowa tests.

10/15/2018 Third Grade CogAT Results
All track 1 results should have gone home with all students today. If you did not receive yours check your student's backpack and/or contact your homeroom teacher. The envelope could be at the bottom of a backpack or tucked behind some papers in their take home folder.
10/8/2018 Third Grade CogAT Results and Next Steps
At this point in time we have not received all of our third grade CogAT scores back from the testing office. Once we do we will alert you by sending home a parent score report and an informational letter. Student's who earn a score of 85% or higher on one or more parts of the CogAT are automatically eligible to take the Iowa tests. Students who do not, but are showing higher capabilities in class are still able to be nominated to take the Iowa tests. This nominated must occur in writing and can come from the teacher or the parent/guardian. For more information regarding the AIG Gateways and testing requirements click the link below.

The Purpose of the WCPSS AIG Program
The purpose of the Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program is to provide an appropriately challenging educational program for students who perform, or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
3/28/18 4/5 Spring AIG Testing
Parents, be on the lookout for information to come home during the next two weeks regarding AIG evaluation results. Any students who is identified as AIG will start their direct services at the beginning of the next school year. (This is a policy set by the district.)
3/28/18 AIG Testing

1/2/2018 - Third Grade Parents Who Have Students Who Took the Iowa Tests
Our next steps will be to determine if your student is Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted. Or, if they are simply high achievers who will continue to need in class differentiation. This is a process that will last until about mid-March. To determine which students are AIG the School Based Committee for Gifted Education at OCE uses the district set gateways. See the gateways by clicking HERE and then scrolling down to the document "AIG Gateways".
*Students who attain a 95% or higher on multiple sub tests (on the Iowa and CogAT) may not need additional testing. Some students who did not attain 95% or higher on multiple sub tests may need additional testing. Either way you will be notified for permission to move forward.
*All students who attained scores 95% or higher on multiple sub tests received a parent letter. Please review this, sign, and return it at your earliest convenience.
*If your student did not attain a score of 95% or higher on multiple sub tests or even just one, they will not be considered for AIG. The homeroom teacher will continue to provide differentiation support for all students to meet their needs and ensure continued academic success.
**If you have questions please contact your homeroom teacher or the AIG teachers. We are here to support you in fully understanding this process. (Anne Sheehan asheehan@wcpss.net or Cindy Seder cseder@wcpss.net )

If a students transfers to another school within Wake County all AIG and SSA service plans will follow them. If they transfer out of the district it will depend on the new district's policy. However, we will be sure to include all key documents in their cumulative folder so the new school is aware of what was happening in Wake County. You can also request additional copies of their paperwork if needed.
5/23/17 AIG Nominations
AIG nominating and testing is complete for this school year. Students can be nominated starting the first day of the next school year. Testing windows will be published at that time.

September 9, 2020 All 3rd, 4th, & 5th Grade OCE Families - AIG Testing - Fall 2020

Thank you for your continued patience while we wait for district leadership to work out the details for AIG testing during these unprecedented times.

It will also be posted in our AIG Google Classrooms. All meets will occur during grade level office hours.
ACCESS THE SCHEDULE HERE - It can also be accessed inside your child's Google Classroom.
4/6/2020 AIG Direct Services - COVID-19 Situation
At this point in time the AIG teachers at Olive Chapel won't be "holding" AIG groups. We will be meeting and planning with your homeroom teachers and providing support that way.
We are here to support you and your student(s)! Thank you!

*A nomination for AIG testing does not guarantee testing. The SBCGE meets to discuss all relevant data on the nominated student and then decides if testing is appropriate.

Once we do we will alert you by sending home a parent score report and an informational letter. Students who do not, but are showing higher capabilities in class are still able to be nominated to take the Iowa tests.
Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.

However, we will be sure to include all key documents in their cumulative folder so the new school is aware of what was happening in Wake County. You can also request additional copies of their paperwork if needed.

2/3/17 Spring Testing Window is Closed
All Spring Testing has been completed. If you have not returned your Parent Checklist yet please do as soon as you can. If you need a new copy please email Miss Sheehan at asheehan@wcpss.net. It will take about 3-4 weeks for us to get CogAT and Iowa test results. After that the School Based Committee for Gifted Ed will schedule a meeting to analyze the data and make AIG recommendations. Be on the lookout for information in your student's take home folder.
1/13/17 Spring Testing Window
Spring testing will occur between January 23rd and February 3rd. Miss Sheehan will administer all tests. We will do everything we can to not disrupt your student's lunch, recess, and specials schedules. They will however miss some general education class time in order to take the needed assessments. Teachers will work with them to ensure they are not missing anything in class.
1/13/17 - Spring 2017 AIG Evaluations
Before the winter break consent forms for AIG evaluation were sent home to certain students. These students will be evaluated for AIG once parent permission is received via a signature on the form. PleaseBelow is our new weekly schedule for AIG. We will start it Monday, January 25th. Please keep in mind that sometimes we cannot predict how things may need to shift. If/when student begin to rotate into the building we may need to be flexible. We will continue to update the teachers first to be sure any changes fit their core lesson needs. We will then update the students using announcements in Google Classroom and parents via email.
