AIG Teachers - Here at Olive Chapel Elementary we are fortunate enough to have 2 AIG teachers to support our AIG students and our teachers. Miss Sheehan and Mrs. Seder will be working with grades 3-5 AIG students throughout the year. See the teacher contact information below if you need support or just want to say hello! Please don't hesitate to reach out to either AIG teacher for support using our CONTACT INFORMATION.
Gifted Education at OCE
At OCE all classroom teachers provide in-class differentiation for all of their students. This differentiation is designed to meet the needs of each individual learner. When it comes to our highly capable students who may need additional support we provide the following enrichment programs (in addition to their in-class differentiation):
Explorers - (Explorers service is offered to all third graders at the start of the year.) In 3rd grade we begin the official identification process for AIG. This starts with Explorers. This program provides additional enrichment time for the 3rd grade students who are showing exceptional abilities. In the beginning of the year all 3rd graders receive instruction from the AIG teacher. As the year progresses this changes to smaller groups of our highly capable students. These groups are flexible and guided by data that shows which students would benefit the most from additional enrichment.
AIG (Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted) - (AIG direct service requires AIG identification.) Direct instruction from the AIG teacher is provided for students who have been identified as AIG in Math and/or ELA. This occurs at least once a week for 45 minutes and the student's grade level standards are utilized for all lessons. AIG is primarily in grades 4-5, but students can be identified in any grade. Students in third grade are typically identified sometime between March - April. They receive direct instruction after the entire identification process is completed.
Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) - Contact Cindy Seder at cseder@wcpss.net with any questions regarding SSA at Olive Chapel. (Per WCPSS and the district set guidelines, SSA participation requires testing and specific qualifying criteria.) SSA is an acceleration option offered to all students who qualify. Students who qualify will grade skip in either Math or ELA. Instruction will be provided by a 1st - 5th grade teacher or via an online module program. Students in grade 5 who are completing the online module will work independently and not receive direct instruction from a teacher. Any student can be nominated by a parent/guardian and tested during the assigned windows. Testing only occurs once a year. SSA is not an AIG service. It is provided by the county and is separate from AIG. Please click HERE for the most complete information regarding SSA.
Click HERE are the current dates for SSA nomination and testing. Students who are nominated and go through the SSA testing process will be considered for SSA for NEXT school year (2020 - 2021). The nomination form is available HERE. If you have questions regarding SSA please contact Cindy Seder at cseder@wcpss.net. Mrs. Seder is our SSA contact and will handle all nominations and testing.
*Students who are already SSA do not need to retest. Their current SSA services will follow them to the next grade level. Students who will be in grade 5 and who will be taking grade 6 classes will receive their instruction through an online class.*
Whole Grade Advancement (WGA) - WGA students consistently perform 2-3 grade levels above his or her current grade level in literacy skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and mathematics. Performance at this higher level is demonstrated both in rote skills (reading words, fluency and math calculation) and most importantly, in academic application (reading comprehension, retelling, written language, math application and problem solving). There is a process to follow and required portfolio components that must be met in order to participate in WGA.
